A New Journey to Katra
On the 4th of July, the fifteenth Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi flagged off the first AC superfast train from Katra, while empowering the 25-km-long Udhampur-Katra rail section line built at an estimated cost of rupees 1,132.75 crore. The railway will introduce its services from July 14, 2014, from New Delhi to Katra, the base camp for pilgrims visiting the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine.

The train has been labeled as ‘Shri Shakti Express’ by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and has assured the public by giving a statement that such services will be launched in major cities in India. The eighteen coaches AC train, will daily depart from New Delhi station at 5:30 PM and arrive at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station at 5:10 AM the next day, similarly while returning the train will leave from Katra at 10:55 PM daily and arrive at 10:45AM the next day.
The Express has created joy and fun among the people as said by Deepak Sharma, Administrative Officer in VIPS, “Train to Katra from Delhi is a most awaited route for Indian people. It is important because of million peoples are regular on this route. Now the journey will be more comfortable and safe.” He further saying, “Basic facilities must be there in the train like- doctor, police staff, female police constables and special cabin facility groups.”

Akash, an IP student shared his opinion, “Earlier it was difficult to travel to Katra because first we had to take a train to Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), then travel to Katra. This train will save time and money of the travelers.”
‘Shri Shakti Express’ will stop at Ambala Cantt, Ludhiana, Jalandhar Cantt, Pathankot Cantt, Jammu Tawai and Udhampur stations on both directions. It comprises of one AC, five AC two-tier and nine AC three-tier coaches. The train is built to transport 10 million pilgrims annually. Waiting hall, escalators, tourist guide counter, VIP lounge, cloak room, lifts and parking spaces are available at the Katra station.
