Sana Sapra of Pearl Academy, who was the winner of The Air France Manish Arora Contest, was recently spotted in Paris during Manish Arora’s fashion show at Paris Fashion Week. She got candid and talked about her experience and her future plans.
1. You have just been back from Paris after attending Paris Fashion Week by Manish Arora. Tell us how was the show and how different was it from shows in India?
My visit to Paris fashion week was an overwhelming experience. It is a dream for any young designer to attend any International fashion show. I consider myself to be very fortunate and blessed to have made it to the Paris Fashion Week, which is considered to be the ultimate fashion show in this industry.
A striking difference between the international fashion show like the Paris fashion show and our own domestic fashion shows is that the prime focus and center of attraction in the their shows is always on the clothes only, whereas, in our domestic fashion shows a lot of emphasis is given to the glamour quotient, show stoppers and at times Bollywood stars. Also, the concept of designing is very different.
2. How would you describe your design style, which won an award at the Air France/Manish Arora?
I was quite moved and touched by the unfortunate incident of the terrorist attack on the French cartoonist magazine ‘Charlie Hebdo’, I felt that our freedom of speech and expression was being throttled and I took this as one of my inspirations to create a design, which would reflect that art is mightier than the gun. Besides Charlie Hebdo, I also sent 2 more designs for the contest. My second design was inspired from the woods and pine cones and the third was on lock and key, unleashing you.
3. What inspired you to take fashion designing as a profession?
I would like to share one thing here that my under graduation was in marketing management. On completion of my under graduation, I realized that my passion and dream lies in fashion designing and creating apparels with a difference. I shared this with my parents, who initially were a bit hesitant but finally supported me in pursuing my passion as my profession. My father still jokingly says that he was inspired by the movie “Three Idiots” which convinced him to support me change my line from management to fashion designing.
4. Besides Manish Arora, who is your favorite Indian designer and why?
As the top international Indian designer there is no doubt that I have always been inspired by Manish Arora and on the international front I have always been inspired by Vivienne Westwood, Riccardo Tisci, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Valentino Garavani, and many more.
My favourite Indian designer has been Abu Jani – Sandeep Khosla, their ability to infuse Indian craftsmanship and textile heritage with European silhouette is remarkable. I have always been very fascinated by their creations.
5. In future, do you want to start your own label or work with any international brands?
Certainly my dream is to start my own label. However, I am not averse to the idea of joining an international brand initially and gaining some experience both on the design front as well as in their brand building exercise.
6. Which is your favorite color and fabric for this summer?
My favourite colour this summer is going to be Orange or let’s just say for me Orange is going to be the new black in the upcoming season, shades of tangerine and coral, to crimson – it’s a very summery colour and also very vibrant. Some great summery fabrics are lightweight cotton, viscose, light weight crepes.
7. What kind of dress would you recommend for the youngsters this summer and why?
This summer I feel light weight Shirt and short dresses/tunics, comfy feminine culottes and more like bohemian style will be the trend.
