Celebrating International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples (Adivasi Divas)

“Nation Celebrates Adivasi Divas Honoring Tribal Heritage, Culture, And Contributions”

The International Day of the World Indigenous People is an annual event held every year on August 9th commonly known in India as Adivasi Divas. In a world where indigenous peoples remain underrepresented, the occasion is a strong reminder of the cultural diversity, distinct contributions, and the inner strength of the indigenous communities all over the world. The day seeks to champion the protection of their rights, lands, and traditions by encouraging people to learn more about the challenges they are facing which are quite profound.

A Day of Awareness and entitlements-

The date of August 9 th was selected to honor the very first meeting of UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations in Geneva, 1982. It was a significant process in placing the problems of indigenous people on the international agenda. In the years since its inception, this day has been used as a pulpit to speak of the plight of the indigenous people and also of their successes, despite the fact that the number of indigenous people in the world today is less than 6 percent yet they form a disproportionately high percentage of those in the world living in abject poverty. The essential aim of the day is to make their voices heard as well as assert their rights, which are provided by the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

The Strength of the Indigenous Knowledge and Culture-

Indigenous communities are the holders of a lot of traditional knowledge most of which are vital in solving many world pressing problems. Their physicians, methods of sustainable agriculture, environmental protection, are all things that hold untold attention to how people could live in concert with the natural world. The Adivasi communities, to give an example, have a spiritual connection with the land, forests and natural resources and their traditional knowledge helps them to conserve their connection to those elements. This day commemorates this great wisdom and tries to make it safe and acknowledged.

This year, the theme of the celebration is “Indigenous Peoples’ Right to Self-Determination: A Pathway for Food Security and Sovereignty” which addresses specifically self-governance and the place of indigenous peoples in informing and controlling their own food systems and access to resources. The theme also aims to convey how empowering indigenous peoples through the ability to preserve their lands and ways of working with traditional agricultural practices is crucial in our effort to combat the food crisis and climate change on the global scale.
