Who is Sharjeel Imam and why he is arrested?

Sharjeel Imam became the talking point of the nation after he was arrested by the Crime Branch the Delhi Police. He was arrested on Tuesday from his hometown in Bihar’s Jahanabad. Sharjeel Imam allegedly made some “inflammatory” speeches following which cases including seditions was charged against him. Teams of police from Delhi and Bihar conducted multiple raids in different parts of the country to nab Sharjeel. However, Sharjeel parents have said that he surrendered to the police. He has been brought to the national capital from Bihar for further procedure.

Why Sharjeel Imam has been arrested?

Sharjeel allegedly said on January 16 that if five lakhs people came together, they could cut northeast from India. He also said “Cutting of Assam is our responsibility, only then they will listen to us. We know the condition of Muslims in Assam… they are being put in detention camps.” Imam clarified that he was speaking about road blockades. Five states Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Delhi, Manipur and Uttar Pradesh have filed cases against Imam.

Who is Sharjeel Imam?

Sharjeel Imam is a Jawahar Lal Nehru University student in PhD programme. He is a Computer Science graduate in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. He shifted to Delhi for pursuing research at the Centre for Historical Studies at the JNU. Father of Imam, late Akbar Imam, was a JDU leader who had unsuccessfully contested assembly election in Bihar.

Sharjeel was associated to with the anti-CAA protest in Shaheen Bagh till January 2 when he “called it off” citing political interference.

The Delhi Police Crime Branch registered a sedition charge against him over the threatening. Later, Police of Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur also lodged FIRs against Sharjeel.
