What ‘taking rest’ can mean to a person. Here is how ‘Rest’ can look like

What ‘rest’ can look like? Why some people are resistant to taking rest

We have glorified working so much that we don’t realize what burnouts are, and there is no surprise, resting is not something that we embrace. There have been so many times, people take pride in saying how much they have worked, and see their burnouts as an ornament. Being constantly on the go perhaps can be a sign of being in form, productive but always being on the go and giving yourself trophies for the same can be a problem for your physical and mental health. And yet when they choose to take the time off, for resting, the resting time often shapes in the form of an off time, that they choose to dedicate to activities they have been overlooking for long.

We did small research asking people some simple questions about what resting means to them, what are the signs that make them feel they need rest, and what all activities can’t be included in their ‘Rest-day’ schedule, but before we go on to that, let’s see why resting is important.

Why resting is important?

If the question ever pops that ‘why to rest?’ then the simplest answer to the same is ‘to survive’. A person needs rest to grow, regrow, and rejuvenate the part they have lost while working. It is to bring those parts back which they have lost while working.

Why is resting important?

Common Signs that your body needs rest

Talking about what can be the common signs, which can state that your body needs rest, here are a few which are applicable to generally everyone.

Body Aches
Tiredness
Creativity Block
Unusually  dehydrated
Constant anxiousness
Lacking progress in common tasks
Oddly moody
In a spell of self doubts
Difficulty in breathing
Lacking Motivation to work

We asked a sample of 25 people, from the age group 20-30 years, and here are the responses that we have received.

Having said that different people can have their own signs for which their body needs rest, yet, like body aches, unusual dehydration even when one is hydrating oneself, being moody, lacking the motivation to work, being constantly anxious are some of the most common indicators of the fact that a person needs to take rest. The stats of such nature does show the lack of awareness in identifying their signs of when do they need rest.

The open-ended question asking what taking rest means to them, the common responses here included –

“When I can relax, eat my breakfast without any rush and having a good sound sleep.”
“Spending quality time with me and doing nothing.”
“Not doing any work or work-related stuff. Watching a movie, reading a book, sleeping, they are all part of taking rest.”
“Getting free of thoughts and keeping my body in a comfortable posture.”
“Having me time”
“Rejuvenating my body, mind, and cells”

Well, to see what these responses can mean to people, we listed down a few things, that aren’t exactly on the contrary of resting and their meanings of resting, yet don’t match the general definition of resting. We asked people to choose what can’t be there in their resting schedule and here are the responses we have got.

Generally, resting means letting the body be in a physical and mental state of rest and is different from taking a break. Though different people have their own way of how and what makes them comfortable, yet, people have chosen to keep ‘introspecting’, ‘planning an outing’, and other activities that require involvement.

How an ideal resting day can look like?

An ideal resting day should be a day where you are awarding yourself with care. Where you are indulging in self-love, self-care, yet not letting yourself go in a spell of work, not exerting yourself out, and taking the time in doing things for fun and enjoyment, and even choosing not to do anything at all.
