Dr. V Narayanan, a senior rocket scientist and the propulsion architect of Chandrayaan-3, has been appointed as the new chief of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). In an exclusive interview with CNN-News18, Dr. Narayanan expressed his excitement and confidence in leading India’s upcoming space missions. He will succeed S Somanath, who completes his tenure next week. Dr. Narayanan’s term as ISRO chief begins on January 14 and will last for two years.
Calling the role a great responsibility, Dr. Narayanan outlined his vision for ISRO. He highlighted several ambitious projects on the horizon, including Chandrayaan-4, the Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission, and the Venus orbital mission. “We have a clear road map,” he said, emphasizing his faith in the ISRO team to deliver on these projects collectively.
With nearly 40 years of experience at ISRO, Dr. Narayanan has held various key roles and contributed significantly to India’s space program. An alumnus of IIT-Kharagpur, he credited his seniors, including Vikram Sarabhai and S Somanath, as sources of inspiration. Reflecting on his unexpected rise to the top position, he said, “When we join, we don’t think of these roles. We just work hard and give our best effort.”
Dr. Narayanan also shared his broader vision for ISRO’s role in nation-building. He stressed the need for advancements in areas such as climate studies, disaster management, communication systems, and earth observation satellites. “Our goal is to improve the quality of life for citizens. ISRO has made significant contributions and will continue to do so,” he said.

Dr. Narayanan’s appointment has also been a proud moment for his family. His wife, Dr. Kavitha, and daughter, Divya, expressed their joy and pride. “It’s a huge step for Dad,” said Divya, adding that her father has always taught them the value of hard work and perseverance.
