Top five events in 2019 which dominated the World News
2019 was a very eventful year. We won’t be surprised if you are feeling a bit exhausted as we marched into the new year. It was a busy year on the global scene. An unending parade of summits, protests, and crisis dominated the news throughout the year. Below is the list of top 5 major events across the world in 2019.
5. Brexit
After a long-debacle Brexit issue finally seems to get settled. Theresa May couldn’t persuade the House of Commons to approve the deal she struck with European Union resulting in no call on Brexit. She had to resign from Prime Minister Post after House of Commons voted down her deal three times. Boris Johnson was then named the Prime Minister who tried a variety of debacles tactics to push the deal through Parliament before the Halloween deadline. After failing, he called a snap election where Conservatives won their biggest victory in more than three decades. Parliament voted overwhelmingly on December 20 to exit the European Union by January 31, 2020.
4. US-China Trade War
President of United States Donald Trump imposed number of tariffs on the Chinese goods. He imposed a $300 billion worth of tariffs Chinese goods in September 1. Later, he said that he would delay half of those tariffs until December 15. Chinese President Xi Jinping in response announced tariffs on $75 billion worth of goods of United States. The trade war between the two countries have affected economy of other countries too.
3. Amazon Fire
Famers of Brazil set 80,000 fires in 2019 in Amzaon rainforest, which is the most in the decade. After the fire got out of control, critics and activists blamed the policies of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for allowing the destruction of rainforest. French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted, “Our house is burning Literally.” Bolsonaro also rejected the offers of aid for fighting the amazon. Scientist warned that the amazon fire had reached a point when it might become a savanna, which could release billions of tons carbon into the environment.”
2. Hong- Kong Protest
Hong-Kong witnessed a record protest where millions came on roads, airport and other areas to protest against the New Extradition Bill. The protest started against the bill and later developed into a demand of full democracy and accountability of police. China interfered in the Basic law of Hong Kong saying that it has complete jurisdiction over Hong-Kong. Protests in Hong Kong rattled many other countries.
1. Greta Thunberg Global Climate Strike
If a report is made as who was the most talked person in the world in 2019, Greta Thunberg will definitely find a placei in that report. A 16-year-old school girl became the symbol of protest against the Global Warming and Climate Change. The Sweden based environment activist sat outside the parliament of Sewen asking the parliamentarians to take strong action to stop the climate change and global warming. Her ‘How Dare You’ Speech at the UN Climate Summit became hugely popular and was circulated all over the world. She became an inspiration for the world and students across the world marched on roads to save the planet.
