Saudi doctor arrested after car attack at German Christmas market kills 2, injures 60 others
A tragic incident unfolded at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, as a speeding BMW drove through a crowd, killing two people and injuring over 60 others. The suspect, a 50-year-old Saudi doctor living in Germany since 2006, has been arrested.
Authorities identified the suspect as Taleb A., a psychiatrist residing in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt. Police believe he acted alone, and the threat is now contained. The incident occurred around 1800 GMT, with the suspect’s vehicle plowing 400 meters through the crowded market, leaving a trail of casualties, debris, and shattered glass in the central town hall square.

Police with pistols drawn are seen telling the bearded, glasses-wearing man to lie down in the arrest footage. Officers could be heard yelling, “Hands on your back, don’t move.”
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed condolences to the victims and their families. “This tragedy raises the worst fears,” Scholz said. He praised the rescue workers and pledged support to Magdeburg during these difficult hours.

The attack comes amid heightened security concerns around Christmas markets, which authorities have previously warned could be targets for Islamist-motivated individuals. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser had urged people to remain vigilant during the festive season.

The United States conveyed support and condolences. “We stand with Germany and are ready to help in recovery efforts,” Matthew Miller, a spokesman for the State Department, stated.
The incident follows a series of suspected Islamist attacks in Germany. In August, a Syrian suspect was arrested after a stabbing spree at a street festival in Solingen killed three people. Earlier, an Afghan suspect was arrested for fatally stabbing a policeman.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk stirred controversy, calling Scholz an incompetent fool and demanding his resignation. Musk, known for supporting Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, described them as the nation’s saviors. The German government noted Musk’s remarks but refrained from commenting.
This tragic event has left Germany grappling with grief and security concerns as investigations continue.
