Ragging Horror at Kerala Medical College: Dumbbells Hung from Private Parts

Kerala nursing students brutally ragged, seniors arrested for torture, extortion, and threats under Anti-Ragging Act

Kerala nursing students faced brutal ragging, five seniors arrested under the Anti-Ragging Act

A shocking case of ragging has come to light at the Government Nursing College in Kottayam, Kerala. Three first-year students filed a police complaint, revealing months of brutal physical and mental abuse by their seniors. The incident has led to the arrest of five third-year nursing students under the Anti-Ragging Act.

The victims, all from Thiruvananthapuram, described horrifying acts of torture that began in November 2024 and continued for nearly three months. According to the complaint, the seniors forced the juniors to strip naked and hung dumbbells from their private parts. They also stabbed the victims with a compass from a geometry box, causing severe injuries.

The cruelty didn’t end there. The seniors applied lotion to the wounds, intensifying the pain. When the victims screamed in agony, the lotion was forcibly smeared into their mouths. The seniors allegedly filmed these acts and threatened the juniors with dire consequences, including ruining their academic futures, if they reported the abuse.

The complaint also revealed that the seniors regularly extorted money from the juniors on Sundays to buy alcohol. Those who refused to pay were beaten. One student, unable to endure the harassment any longer, informed his father, who encouraged him to approach the police.

The Kottayam Gandhinagar police acted swiftly, suspending the accused students and arresting them under the Anti-Ragging Act. All five are currently in police custody and are expected to appear before a magistrate soon.

This incident comes just weeks after a 15-year-old schoolboy in Kochi died by suicide. His mother alleged that he was brutally ragged, which pushed him to take his own life. These cases highlight the urgent need to address ragging and ensure the safety of students in educational institutions.

Ragging, often disguised as a rite of passage, has no place in a civilized society. Such acts of violence and humiliation can leave lasting scars on victims, both physically and mentally. Strict enforcement of anti-ragging laws and awareness campaigns are essential to prevent such incidents in the future.

The bravery of the victims in speaking out against their tormentors is commendable. Their courage serves as a reminder that no one should suffer in silence. It is the responsibility of educational institutions, authorities, and society as a whole to create a safe and supportive environment for students.
