Paris Olympics 2024: Athletes Face Food, Transportation Issues, Organisers Say ‘Taken Measures’
Paris Olympics 2024- With an emphasis on local and organic products as well as additional vegetarian options, the organizers had promised fresh produce that was primarily created in France. Still, some insisted on having additional meat. The catering company Sodexo is in charge of feeding an estimated 40,000 meals a day to 15,000 athletes in the Olympic Village, using the more than 600 tonnes of fresh food donated by Carrefour.
Paris Olympics announced on Monday that initial issues regarding logistics have been addressed following concerns raised by several delegations regarding food and transportation services in the Games. The quantity and quality of the food offered also raised concerns among the athletes after
the catering staff decided to ration the number of eggs to be used in breakfast last week.
Sustenance was also assured to be sourced from local producers, preferably exclusively produced in France with themes, which included local and organic and significantly more vegetarian choices. A few called for even more meat, though.
With more than 600 tonnes of fresh produce obtained from Carrefour, catering company Sodexo is expected to supply around 40 000 meals to 15 000 athletes in the Olympic Village daily.
About the food, some changes have been made, typical when expanding the restaurant’s services, Paris 2024 Chief Executive Officer Etienne Thobois disclosed during the press briefing.
“We have reinforced animal proteins with 700 kilos of eggs and a ton of meat to provide for the athletes’ needs, whom we consider as the epicenter of Paris 2024 experience.”
South Korea’s top Olympics swimming official said six South Korean swimmers destined for the Olympics vacated the athletes’ village on Friday to reside in a hotel close to the swimming pool.
Thus, the Korea Swimming Federation said this, after Kim Woo-min and Hwang Sun-woo, two of the swimmers, had the previous day expressed distress due to their transportation in hot buses for long distance.
‘‘Initially we have had some issues with regard to transportation of the athletes particularly before the commencement of the games,’’ Thobois said. Since then, we have done what we have done with reserve (buses) to serve the athletes in the best way possible and I believe that system is in its best state right now.
The Australia delegation with a contingent of 460 athletes came well prepared to the games having brought with them over three tonnes of tuna, 10000 muesli bars 2400 meat pies, apart from three baristas who project that they will make over 20000 coffees during the games. They were, however, satisfied with the experience they had been accorded in the village.
Some initial problems with movement have been solved and the choice of meals is diverse .The quantities have been stepped up and staff too have been recruited. When the AOC has given some inputs, the action is altered.
