When and how India should lift the coronavirus lockdown in the country?
Five focal points by WHO to lift the coronavirus lockdown across the world
While the date of the end of lockdown nears, speculations and concern for lifting the lockdown are making waves in the country. The rising number of positive cases of coronavirus infected people has put a dent in the government’s idea of lifting the restrictions across the country. PM Modi held talks with the chief ministers of various states to take their inputs about the lockdown. As per the sources, most of the CMs agreed on extending the lockdown. Punjab and Orissa have already extended the lockdown till May 1 and April 30 respectively. Prime Ministers gave the indication at the meeting that he will extend the lockdown saying that we are in “social emergency” state.
In the second meeting of Prime Minister with the chief ministers on Saturday, Arvind Kejriwal said that the country-wise lockdown should be extended till 30th April. The transport system should not resume at any cost.
The biggest problem is that there is no concrete model anywhere in the world to exit from the COVID-19 lockdown. In China, where the pandemic hit first, the lockdown was lifted after two months and in a phased manner. In Wuhan province, china lifted the restrictions after 76 days. People are now allowed to travel in the city and across the borders. But, reports suggest that the Chinese government are keeping intense surveillance on the movement of people.
WHO suggests exit strategies based on five focal point
The first focal point is the plan. WHO said that if the people will stay at their home, it will buy time for the government and authorities to come up with a plan to attack and eradicate the virus.
Second focal point says that the lockdown can be lifted when the healthcare system of a country is prepared to take on the thousands of infected people. India currently lacks the medical infrastructure to handle the community transmission of COVID-19. Neither we have enough medical equipment, beds nor we have enough health workers.
The third focal point discusses the herd immunity. This term is called when the majority of the population of a country has developed immunity against the novel coronavirus. Immunity to a specific virus develops in a person when he/she gets an infection from the same pathogen.
Fourth focal point is vaccine development. No country in the world has become successful to produce a vaccine so far. Trials for vaccines are going on, but experts say that it will take at least a year to make the vaccine.
The fifth focal point is when the government machinery is ready to take on the pandemic. This is an issue of governance. 215 of over 700 districts of the country have reported novel coronavirus case, the official said that 62 of them have 80 per cent of all cases of COVID-19.

Experts believe that special correspondent plan should be rolled out for these districts to halt the progress of coronavirus outbreak. Bhilwara model is being cited as the roadmap for the future. A lot depends upon the state governments as they will be responsible to implement plans.
