The year 2019 was an exciting year for the Judiciary. It has passed some historical judgments and answered long-pending questions. 2019 was indeed a historic year when it comes to judgments. Let us take a look at the top 6 Historic Judgements by Supreme Court in 2019.
1. Ayodhya Dispute
This is inevitably one of the most iconic judgments of this year. The Supreme Court ended a long term dispute by finally giving the disputed site for the construction of a Hindu temple. It identified deity Ram Lalla as a legal entity and awarded it the 2.77-acre land. The 5 judge bench also gave the Central Government the order that a 5 acre land in Ayodhya is awarded to the Sunni Waqf Board for building a mosque.
2. Sabrimala verdict
The apex court said that the verdict it gave last year on this case is not the final verdict and has referred it to a 7 judge bench for further hearing. The SC had allowed women of all ages to enter the shrine in Kerala. This was met with a lot of protests and also appreciation.
3. Rafale case
The Rafale purchase had been riddled with a lot of controversies. The SC finally stated in 2019 that its 2018 judgment still stands and there was no corruption and irregularities in the purchase of the fighter aircraft.

4. CJI under RTI
A five-judge bench ruled that the office of the Chief Justice of India also falls under the Right to Information Act.
5. Ranjan Gogoi was given a clean chit
A three judges bench gave Ranjan Gogoi (now ex CJI), a clean chit in the sexual harassment case.
6. Article 370
The article that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir was repealed by the Parliament and the SC has reserved its judgment and will hear it next year.
In the coming year, the SC will be hearing other cases such as that on the Citizenship Amendment Act as well.
