Fact Check: Is government really reducing 30 per cent pension?

Several fake messages are doing round on the social media regarding coronavirus, Don’t believe them


The government and authorities are not fighting just with the deadly virus, they are also fighting a war against fake news too. Every day, hundreds of fake messages are created and forwarded via social media, especially on WhatsApp. Authorities have to often take to social media to clear the air about the fake news that is misleading people. One of those false claims say that the Indian government is going to reduce pension by 30 per cent and terminate it for people above 80 years of age in the wake of the novel coronavirus.

If you have seen posts, message and story on Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, Twitter or anywhere else claiming the same, we want to tell you that those are fake. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) of central government quashed those rumours via a Twitter post.

Once the officials debunked the false news, many have thanked the agency for clearing the air.

One of the Twitter user wrote, “Was frightened with this news but feeling relaxed now”. However, a retired government official (as per his bio on Twitter) said that it was not sufficient only to clarify that the rumours were fake. He wanted an enquiry into this and the person responsible to spread the rumours to be taken to the task so that nobody dares to spread rumours or fake news.
