Income tax raids on ex-BJP MLA uncover ₹155 crore evasion, luxury cars, and crocodiles

The Income Tax department’s raid on the home of former BJP MLA Harvansh Singh Rathore in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, has revealed a mix of undeclared wealth and an unusual discovery—three crocodiles in a pond on his property.

The raids, conducted since Sunday, targeted Mr. Rathore and his associate, former councillor Rajesh Kesharwani, on allegations of massive tax evasion. According to officials, the operation uncovered tax evasion amounting to ₹155 crore.

From Mr. Rathore’s residence, officers seized ₹3 crore in cash and substantial quantities of gold and silver jewellery, whose valuation is ongoing. The surprise came when three crocodiles were found in a small pond on his property. The forest department was immediately alerted to address the situation.

At Mr. Kesharwani’s home, investigators found several imported luxury cars registered under benami names, further complicating the case. The Income Tax department has sought details from the Transport department to verify the ownership of these vehicles.

Mr. Kesharwani, who operated a beedi business with Mr. Rathore, is reported to have evaded taxes worth ₹140 crore. Documents linked to the evasion have been recovered, revealing that he was also involved in construction ventures.

Mr. Rathore, a veteran BJP leader and businessman, served as an MLA after winning the 2013 Madhya Pradesh assembly elections. He was also a strong contender for the district chief position. His father, Harnam Singh Rathore, previously held a ministerial role in the state government.

The raids have brought to light extensive financial misconduct, including the use of benami assets. Both individuals are under investigation for their roles in the tax evasion schemes.

The case highlights the scale of corruption and illicit activities among public figures, underscoring the need for stronger regulations and accountability. Further investigations are underway, with authorities focused on recovering assets and establishing the full extent of the evasion.
