Coronavirus pandemic has panicked the world, from shutting down the Taj Mahal’s door to postponing St Patrick’s Day Parade – countries worldwide are shutting down the venues to stop large gatherings for curbing the spread of Coronavirus.
On Sunday, India observed a 14-hours Janta Lockdown (self lockdown) after the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi asked over 1 billion people to stay home from 7 am to 9 pm. The government in countries worldwide closed their holy shrines and pilgrims, suspended or postponed sports, and other events due to Coronavirus. Here is a list of monuments, exams, pilgrimage, sports, and other celebrations and events that cancelled due to Coronavirus.
1. The Taj Mahal
In an unprecedented move, ASI shut all the monuments come under it for the public until March 31, including the Taj Mahal. On average, the Taj Mahal gets more than 18 thousand footfalls daily, and this is for the first time in history that ASI had to shut the Taj Mahal due to a public health emergency.
However, this is not the first time that the Taj Mahal had to close down, the Taj was once closed during World War II, 1971 Indo-Pak war, and during the flood of 1978.
2. Mahalkal Temple
For the first time in centuries, the Mahakal temple in Ujjain closed its doors from 17th to March 31 for devotees. The decision came after the coronavirus cases registered in MP. The temple board took the decision to prevent the large gathering of devotees.
Other famous shrines that closed down in India are – Siddhivinayak Temple, Tuljabhavani Temple, Shirdi Saibaba Temple, Jagannath Temple, Vaishno Devi Yatra, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, Ganga aarti at Varanasi ghat, ISKCON Temple in Bengaluru.
3. St. Patricks’ Day Parade
New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which was planned to happen on March 17, was rescheduled for the first time in 250 years.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade It is one of the city’s most significant recurring public events that draws an estimated 150,000 marchers and two million spectators a year. Many Police personnel and military groups, firefighters, Irish musicians, and student groups participate in the parade from across the United States.
4. Scottish Exam
Since 1888, this is the first time when the exams for Scottish school pupils were cancelled. The education Secretary of Scotland announced the cancellation of the exams due to Coronavirus for the first time in history.
John Swinney, the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills, said that “Scotland has never cancelled the examination. Since 1888, they have been held every May or June, even amid two world wars the exams went ahead.”
5. Peace Corps
The US agency halted Peace Corps for the first time in history due to coronavirus outbreak. The US evacuated all Peace Corps volunteers from all the countries for their safety.
Peace Corps is a volunteer program run by the United States government in more than 60 countries with over 7,000 volunteers.

6. Gawthorpe World Coal Carrying Championships
For the first time in the 57-year history of Gawthorpe World Coal Carrying Championships, it is canceled due to coronavirus outbreak. The annual race was first run in 1964, and since then, it is run by several participants on the Easter day every year. All the participants who booked their place in the race will carry their entry into next year’s event, on April 5, 2021.
7. Little 500
Little 500 director disappointed over 25,000 fans after announcing the cancellation of the race due to the spread of Coronavirus. The race was first organized in 1951, and this happened for the first time in history that the Little 500 was suspended.
The Little 500 is an annual track cycling race that held on the third weekend of April at Bill Armstrong Stadium on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.
8. The Brighton Festival
The Brighton Festival, which was scheduled to celebrate in May, has been called off for the first time since it was founded in 1967. It is the largest annual curated multi-arts festival in England that celebrates music, theatre, dance, circus, art, film, literature, debate, outdoor and family events, in the city of Brighton and Hove in England each May.
