Election Commission Warns Arvind Kejriwal Over Yamuna Poison Remarks

EC warns Kejriwal over Yamuna poison remarks, seeks detailed response to avoid public disharmony

EC warns Kejriwal over Yamuna poison remarks, seeks detailed response by Jan 31 to avoid action

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a stern warning to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal over his recent statement accusing the Haryana government of “mixing poison” in the Yamuna river. The poll body has asked Kejriwal to submit a detailed response by 11 am on January 31, failing which it will take appropriate action.

In a letter to Kejriwal, the ECI stated that his remarks “prima facie appear to promote disharmony and enmity between different groups.” The Commission expressed concern that such statements could harm relations between residents of Haryana and Delhi, causing lasting division. It reminded Kejriwal, a former Delhi Chief Minister, of the serious consequences his words could have on public order and social harmony.

The ECI has sought a specific and detailed reply from Kejriwal, asking him to clarify key points:

  • What type of poison was allegedly mixed in the Yamuna?
  • What evidence supports this claim?
  • Where was the poison detected?
  • Which Delhi Jal Board engineers were involved in identifying and preventing its entry into Delhi?

The Commission emphasised that Kejriwal’s response should be entirely focused on these problems and not related to the ongoing issue of growing ammonia levels in the Yamuna.

Previously, Kejriwal alleged that the raw water received from Haryana was highly contaminated and extremely poisonous to human health. However, the ECI found his claims inflammatory and cautioned that such utterances could spark civil unrest.

The poll body’s intervention highlights the sensitivity of inter-state relations and the need for responsible statements from public figures. Kejriwal’s remarks have sparked a debate, with critics accusing him of using divisive language for political gain.

As the deadline for his response approaches, all eyes are on Kejriwal and how he addresses the ECI’s concerns. The Commission’s decision could set a precedent for holding leaders accountable for statements that risk promoting disharmony.

This development comes amid ongoing tensions between Delhi and Haryana over water-sharing issues, underscoring the need for constructive dialogue over inflammatory rhetoric.
