Understanding and breaking the stigma of Depression

After the tragic death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, many people started putting status and messaged each other that they are available to talk to. There are two things we should learn from this incident. First, we should be open to our friends and family or any known person who is going through depression before they take a wrong step and not after they take the wrong decision. Second- we should always be available for them, not only when the whole country is talking about it. We wonder how many of those people who put the status that they want to talk about the depression would be available now (Sushant Singh’s incident is awakening) to talk about the personal challenges of a person.

Mental health has always been seen as a stigma in our country and we have been advised to keep a safe distance from people struggling with their mental health. Experts believe that keeping a check of mental health is as important as physical health. We have to understand that people who have mental health problems are not so-called ‘Pagal’ and we should not stay away from them. Instead, we should spend more time with them to make them feel that someone is there who cares.

Depression needs to be understood

Depression, a part of mental health problems, has also been stigmatized largely due to the negative nature of the illness that makes depressives look unreliable and unattractive. This leads to self-stigmatization that makes the patient shameful and secretive about their struggle and they prevent going for proper treatment. The major contributing factor could be that people who have never been in depression don’t understand what depression is and what a person goes through?

It is very important to understand the seriousness of Depression. We shouldn’t make fun of people who are going through it. Rather, we should take out a little piece of your time and talk to that person, maybe he/she would be able to feel good after sharing thoughts. You might actually save lives by investing just 5 to 10 minutes. Depression is basically a medical illness that negatively affects how a person feels, the way he/she thinks or acts. It causes a feeling of sadness, loss of interests in things enjoyed earlier.
