The decision on CBSE Exams 2021 has arrived. Pressure on for Class 12 students while class 10 students take a sigh of relief.
After pressure from opposition leaders, parents and child right bodies, the centre has finally taken a decision on CBSE Exams 2021. After consultation with prime minister Narendra Modi the Education Ministry has decided to postpone class 12 CBSE exams 2021 to an undecided date and to cancel class 10 exams. The revised dates for class 12 exams will be announced on June 1 after deliberations by the Education ministry.
The decision which was highly awaited is now being appreciated. In a statement issued after the meeting with PM Modi, the Union education ministry said, “Looking to the present situation of the pandemic and school closures, and also taking into account the safety and well-being of the students, it is decided as follows. The Board Exams for Class 12 to be held from May 4th to June, 14th, 2021 are hereby postponed. These exams will be held hereafter.” It was also said that a notice of at least 15 days will be given before the start of the CBSE examinations 2021.
“The results of Class Xth Board will be prepared on the basis of an objective criterion to be developed by the Board. Any candidate who is not satisfied with the marks allocated to him/her on this basis will be given an opportunity to sit in an exam as and when the conditions are conducive to hold the exams,” the statement added. This specific move is like a boon to Class 10 students as it gives the flexibility to choose between two alternatives for their results.

Students and parents from all over the nation were demanding for cancellation of CBSE board exams. The demands of students were trending on social networking sites and a number of petitions were being circulated, urging and demanding the Centre to cancel the exams keeping in mind the mental and physical wellbeing of not only students but also teachers. “The situation in India is getting worse day by day. When there were only a few cases in the country they cancelled the remaining board exams And now when the situation [is] getting worse the government organized offline boards exam. What about student safety? What about the students who [might] test positive during the offline boards exam?” read one such online petition.

A number of Chief Ministers of different states including Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had urged the Central government to either cancel or at least postpone the CBSE exams 2021. The exams which were originally scheduled to be held in May and June has been postponed in response to worsening situations in a number of states. The statement said that CBSE board exams were of all-India character and thus taking exams in some states and postponing it in some would have been unwise.
Following the announcements, the students of Council For The Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) are looking up to the authorities to make an announcement on similar lines. The CISCE board has in the past acted similarly to the Central board but it remains to be seen what the CISCE decides now. According to the present schedule, ICSE exams will begin on May 4 and continue till June 7, whereas ISC exams will begin on April 8 and conclude on June 18.
The class 10 students of CBSE have taken a sigh of relief but the pressure is still on for Class 12 boards. Postponed boards exams only add to the pressure on students. The Board exams have been made into a big deal by parents and so there is no option for students to ease up even during a pandemic. While mental health has been a cause for concern for so many people during the pandemic, the students have it different. Locked up in their house with minimum physical contact with the outside world, keeping oneself sane have never been harder. The government should have made thing clearer for class 12 students who will have to worry about a number of other things including choosing their subjects for undergraduate degrees, college entrances, moving to new cities etc. politicians like Priyanka Gandhi have said that holding a nationwide exam for which close to 3 lakh students will appear is going to be an incredibly difficult task during the pandemic. The safety of students, teachers and a number of other supporting staff will be at stake.
