Coromandel Express Accident, Dubbed ‘The Worst Railway Accident Of The Century,’ Renders Hundreds Dead And Countless Injured

How did the Coromandel Express accident occur?
On June 2, at around 7 PM, two passenger trains- Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express and the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express got derailed in Odisha’s Balasore district and crashed into a stationary goods train. Numerous carriages from the Coromandel Express got derailed as a consequence of the crash, and some of these carriages even ended up in an opposite track.
While the goods trains and the Coromandel Express were derailed, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express came and crashed into these trains resulting in even more devastation and mayhem.
Aftermath of the Coromandel Express accident:
More than 200 ambulances were present at the site of the crash, and over a 100 extra doctors and health workers have been mobilized. Apart from these ambulances, local buses also helped transport the injured to hospitals. Those who survived, helped the injured. Over 500 rescue personnels were dispatched to the site. The injured were treated at the Medical College in Balasore, Soro CHC, Gopalpur CHC, and Khantapada PHC.
Sharing his horrifying experience, a survivor told ANI news agency, “10 to 15 people fell on me when the accident happened and everything went haywire. I was at the bottom of the pile.I got hurt in my hand and also the back of my neck. When I came out of the train bogie, I saw someone had lost their hand, someone had lost their leg, while someone’s face was distorted.”
The government’s aid for the victims of the Coromandel Express accident:
This is the deadliest train accident the country has seen in over a score. Odisha’s Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has decided to observe a one day mourning throughout the state, in respect to the victims. He expressed his grief at the devastating loss and said in a statement, “I am deeply distressed by this extremely tragic train accident.

I have to thank the local people, the local teams who have worked overnight to save people from the wreckage. Railway safety should always be given the first preference. The people have been taken to hospital in Balasore also in Cuttack, so that they recover as fast as possible.”
This morning, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Railway Minister made a visit to the site of the crash to assess the gravity of the situation. He said, “Restoration work will take place immediately. Staff and equipment is ready for restoration work, but our first priority is rescue and medical aid to those injured. We will know details only after a detailed inquiry. An independent inquiry will be done.”
The railway minister is providing a compensation of Rupees 10 Lakhs to the family members of those who perished in the accident; Rupees 2 Lakhs to those gravely injured; and Rupees 50, 000 to those who sustained minor injuries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared his sympathies over the mishap, and tweeted, “Distressed by the train accident in Odisha. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon.”

The Prime Minister also made a promise to compensate the families of the deceased with Rupees 2 Lakhs each; and Rupees 50, 000 to the injured through the Prime Minister National Relief Fund (PMRF). Amit Shah also spoke about the accident, and referred to it as “deeply agonising.”

The accident, which occurred on the Howrah-Chennai main line in the Kharagpur division of the South Eastern Railway, has so far resulted in the cancellation of 18 long-distance trains.
