It is a fact that celebrities don’t always have fantasy lives. And, tragically, there are many notable personalities who have died by ending their own life as a result of depression, health issues, or even love struggles.
Divya Bharti, Parveen Babi, Sri Devi and along with Sushant Singh Rajput are among those who were found dead in mysterious circumstances and left a thousand questions unanswered.
A few of these tragedies even inspired some conspiracy theories, making some wonder that if there were cover-ups for foul play.
As the world still suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic, we have another silent killer among us that has dominated the headlines in 2020 and this year as well and that is suicides among celebrities in India due to mental health issues.
After 2020, 2021 is also shaping to be the worst year to look at as more than the global pandemic, this year has been marked by many life loss and we witnessed several deaths of famous personalities like the recent demise of Siddharth Shukla which came as a shock to the entire nation.

Sushant Singh Rajput’s – SSR
In a most shocking scenario, the beloved actor was found hanging at his home in Mumbai on June 14, 2020 in which the reason of his death was reported as suicide and as per the official post-mortem reports. Earlier, it was informed that Sushant was suffering from depression and had stopped taking his anti-depressants and his death triggered multiple debates on the importance of mental health, Bollywood’s reality where how the actor was side-lined by the industry bigwigs. While the investigation is still on as his death shook and divided the entire industry as no one expected such tragedy. There were many instances in the case that led his fans to think that it was a planned murder but so far no such claim has been made nor there is any clarity on why the actor chosen to end his own life.
Sridevi
The day February 24, 2018 was marked as a black day in the history of Indian cinema when the nation lost one of the finest actor under mysterious circumstances. Sridevi was found unconscious in her bathtub, in Dubai UAE, by her husband Boney Kapoor and soon, speculations were rife about the cause and fans and many from the industry as well posted on social media that she was murdered. However, the post-mortem revealed that the death was caused due to “accidental drowning” but what exactly happened on a fateful evening will always remain a mystery now.
Asif Basra
The 53-year-old Indian actor was found dead in a private guest house in McLeodganj in Dharamshala on November 12. Basra was living in a rented house in McLeodganj since five years & featured in supporting roles in films such as ‘Jab We Met’ and ‘Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai’.
Pratyusha Banerjee
She was known for her role as ‘Anandi’ in the popular TV shows like Hum Hain Na, Sasural Simar Ka, Gulmohar Grand and Balika Vadhu, was found dead in her Mumbai apartment in April 2016. She also appeared as a contestant in Bigg Boss 7. Various reports also revealed that she was depressed due to struggles in her relationship with Rahul Raj Singh which was also indicated the reason behind her taking this drastic step.
Sameer Sharma
The 44-year-old television actor, gained fame in ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’, was also found hanging at his Mumbai residence. As per police, it was a suicide case. According to Sameer’s social media posts, it was found that the late actor hinted about his battling depression and many similar poems written in Hindi and English on pain and heartbreaks.
Preksha Mehta
The Crime Patrol actress took her own life at her Indore residence. It was her father who discovered her body and rushed her to the hospital, where she was declared brought dead. Also, right before taking that drastic step, Preksha posted a heartbreaking post on her Instagram saying, “Sabse bura hota hai sapno ka mar jaana’. Multiple news reports also revealed that she was suffering from depression caused by of loss of work during the COVID-19 pandemic and also in a suicide note which she left behind, alleged that her career & failed relationships were reasons for her suicide.
Jiah Khan
The British-American actress committed suicide on June 2013. She earned a lot of appreciation and was also nominated for Filmfare award for Best Female Debut. Jiah Khan’s suicide case was investigated extensively by the CBI. Her mother claimed that actor Sooraj Pancholi murdered her daughter which led to the prosecution to lay charges of murder and sexual assault, which was ultimately failed in 2017.

Kushal Punjabi
The 42-year-old actor who was seen in ‘Ishq Mein Marjawan’ and films like ‘Lakshya’ and ‘Kaal’ committed suicide. A suicide note was later recovered in which he claimed that he was suffering from depression.
Sejal Sharma
Shortly after the death of Kushal Punjabi, it was then an Indian TV actress Sejal Sharma who ended her life at her Mumbai residence on January 24. It was later revealed that the actress was under a lot of stress following the ill health of her parents and then a suicide note was also reportedly recovered at the time, which pointed at her depressed and hard life.
Susheel Gowda
The 32-year-old actor who was best known for his role in the show, ‘Anthapura’ was found dead by hanging in his home town Mandya, according to the police reports. Gowda was also associated with the Kannada television serials and contributed in a few Kannada films as well.
Manmeet Grewal
The 32-year-old TV actor who appeared in many TV shows committed suicide at his residence in Navi Mumbai. The actor was under pressure by debt and couldn’t find any work because of COVID-19 lockdown.
Anupama Pathak
The Bhojpuri film actress committed suicide at her home in Mumbai after completing live session on Facebook, where she said about feeling cheated and won’t be able to trust anyone.
Shikha Joshi
The Bollywood actor, model and classical dancer took her own life in her flat in Mumbai on May 2015 and was found with three small and a large cut around her neck. Her family later demanded a CBI investigation after stating that it was a murder.
Sandeep Nahar
This Indian film and TV actor died by suicide in Mumbai, according to police reports. Nahar who was found hanging by his wife had worked in movies like ‘Kesari’ and ‘MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’, wrote a note on Facebook, stating that he was going to commit suicide. Also, in a video on his social media handle, he spoke about his depressed life on both personal and professional levels.
Kuljeet Randhawa
Kuljeet took her own life because of depression and also mentioned in a note that she is going to end her life as it’s hard for her to cope up with all the pressure.
