Here is the list of CMs of India who resigned in the year 2021
The year 2021, can now be said as the worst year for Indian politics and some sitting Chief Ministers and former CMs of India. As 2021 is about to end, many chief ministers will look back on this as one of the worst years of their tenure.
Here, we will discuss some of the CMs of India who faced a tough time during their tenure.
Yediyurappa made way for Bommai as Karnataka CM
On 26 July, veteran BJP leader Bookanakere Siddalingappa Yediyurappa resigned from the post of Karnataka CM before the completion of his tenure. After him, Basavaraj Bommai took oath as the 23rd Chief Minister of India.
Yediyurappa clarified that nobody had pressured him for this decision. He stepped down so that somebody else could take his place. Yediyurappa’s office term was meant to be completed in 2023. But he resigned after 2 years prior.

Punjab’s Game of Thrones
In Punjab, Captain Amrinder Singh ruled the state for nine and half years. His resignation given on 19 September 2021 was most dramatic compared to others. He wrote a long letter to Sonia Gandhi listing all his achievements. He also made it very clear, “I may be down, but I am not out. And I am going to fight back.” In several media briefings, he expressed that he felt humiliated.
He also left a question- Will the captain’s exit hurt congress’s Punjab polls?
Now, Charanjit Singh Channi is the new chief minister of Punjab. It will also be a challenge for Charnajit to fit in Captain’s shoes. There are many speculations that Navjot Singh Sidhu is likely to be projected as CM’s face for Punjab polls.
BJP’s Assam experiment
Former CM of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal was replaced by Himant Biswa Sarma. For the very first time, BJP was elected in the North-East. Sonowal and Sarma, both were credited for the victory of the party in Assam.
But Sarbananda Sonowal handed over the crown to Himant Biswa Sarma after a high-level meeting with the top leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
BJP’s musical chair in Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh Rawat’s resignation came amid speculations of unrest within the BJP’s state cadre. He met BJP leaders in Delhi after several complaints by a section of BJP MLAs over his style of governance.
Therefore, Tirath Singh Rawat was appointed as Chief Minister of Uttarakhand in March 2021. But he was also not able to bring stability within the state. Soon, Tirath Singh Rawat also stepped out from the Uttarakhand Chief Minister’s office. He held the post for less than 4 months. Unelected Rawat faced hurdles to retain the CM post as the deadline to become a member of the Uttarakhand assembly was about to end on 10th September. However, due to the Covid situation, the chances of the Election Commission holding bypolls before the deadline looked grim.
Now, the onus to provide a stable government in Uttarakhand is on Pushkar Singh Dhami. He is an MLA from Khatima assembly Constituency in Uttarakhand.
Coup D’état in Gujarat
Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani’s resignation shocked everyone as barely a year was left to go for Gujarat Assembly elections. Although Rupani, who has not specified the reason for his sudden departure as CM of Gujarat, alleged mismanagement of COVID-19 situation in Gujarat, not seeing Rupani as a mass vote base, may fail to attract crucial Patidar vote could be some possible reason for resignation.
Bhupendra Patel succeeded Rupani as the new CM of Gujarat. Patel is a first-time MLA from the Ghatlodia seat, which was earlier held by Ex-CM Anandiben Patel. He defeated Congress leader Shahikant Patel by over 1 lakh votes.
Surprisingly, except Punjab all the states were led by BJP. And now, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana could be the possible contenders for this too.
