Children at high type 1 diabetes risk if fathers have the condition: Study
A group of researchers has recently established that the chances of a child being born with type 1 diabetes are almost double in case the father had the disease, rather than the mother. The largest such study was reported in the journal Diabetologia. The results suggest that prenatal sensitisation to type 1 diabetes offer children with affected mother lifelong immunity to the disease than children with affected fathers. Scientists are interested in this protection, and it is thought that knowing the causes of such protection could help in the development of new ways of stopping the development of type 1 diabetes.

“People with first-degree relatives who had type 1 diabetes are 8-15 times more likely to have the autoimmune condition – the risk was higher if the relative was father rather than mother,” said lead researcher Dr Lowri Allen from Cardiff University in the UK.
Earlier studies have shown that maternal type 1 diabetes confers a certain extent of risk reduction for type 1 diabetes in childhood pertaining to the early years. A recent study with rare global participants of 11,475 control subjects, recruited with type 1 diabetes between the ages of 0 and 88, concluded that these patients had a significantly higher occurrence of having a father affected with type 1 diabetes, compared to a mother affected by the disease, which diluted the odds by 1. 8 times.

‘In aggregate, our results indicate that the relative advantage of having a mother with type 1 diabetes over a father is a phenomenon that persists in adulthood.’
This probability was especially high if the parent developed type 1 diabetes prior to the individual’s birth, in which case the odds of having a father with type 1 diabetes were given preference over a maternal diagnosis.
On the same note, a child appears to be at a disadvantageous position of developing type 1 diabetes if a mother has the same disease during pregnancy than if the father has the disease. Subsequently, more work needs to be done to identify which factors made people exposed to type 1 diabetes in the womb .
