According to a news release issued on Friday by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a listeria epidemic connected to sliced deli meat in 12 states in the United States has resulted in 2 deaths and 28 hospitalisations. Listeria infection can lead to listeriosis, a bacterial foodborne illness that can afflict those 65 years of age and older, as well as those with compromised immune systems. The bacteria can grow in unpasteurized dairy products or ready-to-eat meals and can withstand refrigeration. The CDC advised persons who are more susceptible to contracting listeria to stay away from meats that are sliced at deli counters until they are cooked to 165 degrees or until they are extremely hot.
