On June 14, World Blood Donor Day, we express our gratitude to voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their contributions of life-saving blood. Each year, countries across the globe celebrate World Blood Donor Day (WBDD), an event that seeks to raise awareness on the important role played by blood donors in supporting global health until we find better ways of improving on current achievements. It is designed to draw attention to a matter concerning safe blood and blood products and express appreciation to unpaid voluntary donors for their valuable donations of blood.

A system which provide patients with safe blood and sufficient blood products for their medical needs is a valuable part of any health care system. World Blood Donor Day is celebrated every year with a different theme to honor those heroic souls who donate their valuable blood to strangers.
On World Blood Donor Day, celebrated on 14 June 2024, WHO, its partners and communities across the world will unite behind the theme: A 20 year commemoration of promoting the spirit of giving: thank you to all the blood donors for their kindheartedness.

The world blood donor day is an important occasion to celebrate, as it is the 20th anniversary of this event, and it is a timely chance to thank donors for their patient years of providing blood for the sick and pay tribute to the influence on the patients. It is also a good time to consolidate further, and increase efforts towards the achievement of a future where optimum and safe blood transfusion is a reachable reality for everybody.
The objectives of the campaign:
- express gratitude to millions of voluntary blood donors who have helped millions of people improve their health.
- High level meetings to showcase the accomplishments and hurdles of individual national blood programmes and the experience and success stories.
- emphasise the growing importance of establishing the habit of voluntary, unpaid and periodic blood donation toward attaining the sustainable access to adequate and safe blood supply.
- In that regard, it is aimed at encouraging young people to become regular blood donors and raising the general public / awareness of the need for regular blood donations and the need to diversify and expand the donor base in the long term.
