Home testing ovulation and fertility? Are they accurate? Experts answer
As a consequence of an increasing number of businesses providing at-home tests, there also arises a warning that people only trust in-home tests that may not provide full or accurate information. Dr Parul Gupta, a reproductive expert at Nova IVF Fertility located in Gurgaon, reflects, “The most common fertility tests have been OPKs, BBT thermometer, fertility monitors, sperm analysis tests, and so forth. These tests often focus on specific aspects of fertility, such as hormone levels or sperm count.” In other words, they fail to have enough grip to deliver a thorough assessment and might overlook the leading causes that would be positively associated with age, past medical history, current medications, etc.

Besides it, quite often male and female contributes to the problem with some kind of the combination, which is complicated to solve.Home tests might only cover the whole range of the factors involved in infertility. In addition, only the medical personnel can give the correct interpretation of the fertility test results.Healthcare preople make assessment on many points related to health of the patient, his medical history and take a few tests to provide a more clear picture about fertility of the patient. Only relying on home tests without professionals interpreting the results for you can cause confusion and wrong decisions that can lead to the worsening of the situation, so home tests are the best complementary tool but should not be a replacement of a visit to the doctor and consultation on the diagnosis of fertility problems.
Chetna Jain, the director of Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Cloudnine Group of Hospitals in Gurgaon emphasized, “It is ovulation, where a mature egg is discharged from the ovary and is present, ready to be fertilized with sperm, that is the main event in the menstrual cycle that is important for conception.” It is imperative to know about ovulation and to predict fertile days accurately if one is to maximize the chances of conception.
Why is ovulation timing important ?
Maximizing Fertility Window:
Ovulation occurs on the mid part of the cycle during menstruation. Through recognizing the day of ovulation and fertile window (the days preceding and including ovarian release), couples can schedule intercourse to be in synch with the egg release and hence increase their chances of fertilisation.
Optimising Sperm Survival:
The couples may achieve success only by planning the sex within the few days of ovulation, when the sperm will be there just when the egg is released. Then the egg will be fertilized, and the pregnancy is possible.
Improving Pregnancy Success:
The couples with well determined time-conception during ovulation carry a higher chance of achieving pregnancy than others who don’t. Being aware of periods of ovulation cycles, as well as ‘fertility windows’ lets couples diagnose at the inception of potential fertility issues and obtain advice from specialists on what measures to take if necessary.
Although these tests are only one component of the fertility kit, they should complement personalised advice given by doctors.
