New Development in Medical Line – Indigenous hand-held X-ray for TB screening

On Wednesday, October 16, 2024, Director General Rajiv Bahl of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) announced a noteworthy development in the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB): a novel handheld X-ray device designed for TB screening that would aid in early detection and treatment efforts and ultimately enhance public health outcomes.

During the 19th International Conference of Drug Regulatory Authorities (ICDRA) INDIA-2024, Dr. Bahl made a statement that stated, “The cost of handheld X-rays is really high. Recently, IIT Kanpur and ICMR collaborated to produce an in-house handheld X-ray that will cost less than half as much as an imported handheld X-ray. This would guarantee that we may conduct TB screenings in the vicinity of patients’ residences and even among susceptible groups.”

Dr. Bahl added that three mpox testing kits have been developed in India. “We have developed three testing kits for Mpox and there are three companies who are manufacturing such kits,” he stated. Regarding sickle cell disease, Dr. Bahl stated that the illness impacted more than a million people in India. The National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission was started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year with the goal of eradicating sickle cell disease as a public health issue by 2047. He noted that the ICMR was actively working toward this goal and had just held a brainstorming session with medical professionals and scientists from across the nation.
