7 Reasons: How is the consumption of momos bad for Health?

Momos, a common Asian dumpling, should not be consumed excessively because of the chemicals used in their manufacturing, the unhealthy fillings, the high glycemic index, the poor quality of the spices, the MSG, the faeces contamination, and the chance for tapeworm infection.

Momos are a type of dumpling that is very popular across Asia. They are made up of a filling, frequently a combination of meat (such as chicken, hog, or lamb), or vegetables, wrapped in a delicate, doughy shell. Momos are frequently served with dipping sauces and can be either steamed or fried. They are a well-liked restaurant and street food dish in several Asian countries, including Nepal, India, Bhutan, and others. Momos are becoming more and more well-liked worldwide thanks to their tasty fillings and adaptability.

But do you know that overconsumption of momos can be harmful in some cases?

Dr Priyanka Rohatgi, Chief Nutritionist, Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi, spoke to Zee News about it :

  1. According to Reports, Momos are prepared from refined flour and then bleached using hazardous chemicals like Azodicarbonamide, Chlorine Gas, and Benzoyl Peroxide. These substances have harmful effects on health, including pancreatic damage and blood sugar spikes
  2. The momo’s fillings are frequently unhealthy and can cause major health problems and infections. Some unsettling allegations have surfaced claiming that while the vegetables are stale, the non-vegetarian momos, in which the meat is allegedly from hens that have been dead for a very long time, are even more disturbing.
  3. Momos are made of maida, they are unhealthy. Constipation could result from it. Additionally, maida has a high glycemic index, which raises blood sugar levels.
  4. The red chilli powder that momo vendors frequently use is of poor quality. Consuming too many spicy meals might also result in haemorrhoids or piles that are bleeding.
  5. Momos’ mono-sodium glutamate (MSG) content is a major health risk. It causes obesity as well as a host of other health problems, including neurological disorders, perspiration, nausea, and palpitations.
  6. According to a report in the Times of India, a study conducted by the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering and Nutrition, Pusa, revealed that momos, one of the popular street food in Delhi, contained faeces in quantities that were far beyond the allowable coliform values.

7. The ingredients in momos, particularly the cabbage, might be hazardous. They may contain tapeworm spores if they are not cooked thoroughly. The brain can be infected by tapeworms, which can result in fatal complications. Therefore, it’s crucial to use caution.
