Where is Jacob Barnett Now? A Look at His Life Beyond the ‘Good American Family’ Series
Jacob Barnett, the gifted child genius, is now a postdoctoral researcher in Spain. Find out where his life stands after the 'Good American Family' series.
Where is Jacob Barnett Now? An Inspiring Update on the Genius Mathematician Behind the True Story of ‘Good American Family’
Jacob Barnett has put the public on claim and amazement due to his astounding brilliance and different life experience. From being called a genius having an IQ higher than Albert Einstein’s to being involved in a highly controversial adoption scandal, Jacob’s journey has indeed been anything but typical. Following the attention raised from Investigation Discovery docuseries entitled The Curious Case of Natalia Grace and Hulu’s Good American Family, many are wondering-where is Jacob Barnett now?
Currently age 26, Jacob continues on his studies overseas. Currently, he is employed as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics in Bilbao, Spain. In March, he posted on Facebook videos, teaching a maths class which showed his ever-burning desire to mathematics and education. That same month, he coauthored a study titled “Heisenberg and Heisenberg-Like Representations via Hilbert Space Bundle Geometry in the Non-Hermitian Regime” with Cornell University, sealing a healthy place in academics.

Since childhood, Jacob demonstrated his superiority in intellect. Officially diagnosed with autism at a very early age, Jacob at the age of just thirteen was on 60 Minutes in 2012, and in the interview he claimed that his diagnosis pushed him towards achieving academic brilliance. His mother Kristine Barnett documented in her recent memoir The Spark: A Mother’s Story of Nurturing Genius, most likely the struggles and victories associated with raising a profoundly gifted child.
Life, however, is not easy in Jacob’s family. The Barnetts adopted Natalia Grace in 2010-she was Ukrainian and presumed to be seven years old when adopted. They filed a petition in court the following year and changed the year of birth to 1989, stating that she was, in fact, an adult masquerading as a child. The Barnetts would soon move Natalia into her own apartment in 2013 after the court certified the change.
Ten years later, though, DNA tests revealed that Natalia was a minor at the time of adoptions. She had her birth year legally restored to 2003. Neither Michael nor Kristine Barnett was convicted of any crime against Natalia’s abandonment, notwithstanding all the serious allegations. Michael was acquitted of his charges in 2022, while the next year, the indictments against Kristine were dismissed.
Though Jacob and Michael told their tale in a 2023 docuseries, they claimed that Natalia was violent and a danger to their family. Jacob narrated several of those incidents involving knives and bleach, saying he father never felt safe whenever she was around. However, there is a complete contradiction in Natalia’s account. In a 2024 interview, she contended that the Barnetts manipulated her with their claims of her being a threat.

Their complicated, contradictory tales are at the heart of Hulu’s Good American Family. The producers of this new show didn’t work with the real-life people involved, but instead drew extensively upon public records and media coverage to tell their version of events.
And still, as a hot nugget at the forefront of public discourse, Jacob Barnett seems to be fixated on continuing with higher education as though untouched by the family drama once attached to the family’s name.
