The U.S. presidential election is at a standstill on election eve. In all of the swing states, including Georgia and North Carolina in the south, Nevada and Arizona in the west, and Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin in the industrial midwest, the polls are remarkably close nationwide.

In every swing state, Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris is either tied with Republican former President Donald Trump or leads by a slim margin, according to the last New York Times/Siena survey. Trump is ahead by a few percentage points in Arizona, which is an outlier. On election day, voters will be influenced by a number of important issues, even though there isn’t a clear favorite to win. According to national polling, Trump’s popularity is still around 43%. He failed to receive 50% of the national popular vote in the last two presidential elections. He never received more than 50% of the vote while serving as president. Additionally, since leaving government, he has never above 50%. He is therefore very unlikely to win Tuesday’s national popular vote because his support has reached a ceiling. This also mirrors Trump’s experience winning the nomination in the Republican primary. He dominated the race, defeating former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and a number of other candidates. However, 15–25% of Republican voters did not support Trump in the majority of those primaries.

On Tuesday, where will these Republican votes end up? Most likely, half will support Trump and wish to vote Republican. Some will just not vote for president because they can’t bring themselves to support Harris. Others will start supporting Harris instead. In fact, the number of people from one party who are supporting the presidential candidate of the other party has never been so high. Those “Republicans for Harris” votes are crucial for Harris. She will also need to repeat the coalition of women, people of color, and young voters who supported incumbent President Joe Biden against Trump in 2020, both nationally and in those same swing states.
