China has initiated military exercises around Taiwan as a stern warning following Taiwan’s vice president, William Lai, stopping over in the United States. Lai, a presidential election frontrunner, visited Paraguay, one of the few countries recognizing Taiwan diplomatically, causing China to brand him a “troublemaker” and pledge to safeguard national sovereignty.

China’s Eastern Theatre Command deployed joint air and sea patrols, along with navy and air force exercises near Taiwan, aiming to test their control capabilities and combat readiness. These actions were directed against perceived “Taiwan independence” moves and foreign connections.

China’s claim over Taiwan is accompanied by a potential use of force. Similar exercises were conducted after US-Taiwan interactions, like Nancy Pelosi’s visit and President Tsai Ing-wen’s meetings with US officials.

Lai’s Pro-Independence Stand:
Although Washington deemed Lai’s transit routine, China’s Communist Party’s Taiwan Work Office condemned it, accusing Lai of collaborating with the US for personal gain. Lai has expressed stronger pro-independence sentiments than President Tsai, antagonizing Beijing, which considers Taiwan a part of China. Lai, a Harvard-educated politician, referred to himself as a pragmatic Taiwan independence worker and vowed to uphold his administration’s core principles.
