Sheikh Hasina had declared months before her untimely demise as prime minister of Bangladesh that “conspiracies” were being planned to overthrow her administration and that she might be assassinated, similar to her father, the independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Following the military takeover of Bangladesh yesterday, Ms. Hasina resigned and left the country amid violent protests. Saying that many foreigners were eyeing Bangladesh, she had warned, “Like East Timor…they will carve out a Christian country, taking parts of Bangladesh (Chattogram) and Myanmar with a base in the Bay of Bengal.”

Over 100 demonstrators lost their lives in clashes with police during one of the worst marches in Bangladesh’s history on Sunday. Over 400 people have died in all since the protests started. On Monday, the demonstrators broke into the Prime Minister’s mansion, but Ms. Hasina escaped a direct confrontation since she had already resigned and taken a military plane out of the nation. A few hours later, the head of the nation’s army called a press conference and announced the formation of an interim administration. Ms. Hasina touched down later that day at the Indian Hindon Air Force base, which is roughly 30 kilometers from Delhi, the nation’s capital. Sources told that she is expected to depart for London, where she might apply for asylum.
