Senators Probe Musk’s SpaceX Russia Ties
US Senators Jack Reed and Jeanne Shaheen are requesting probes into SpaceX’s contracts following revelations that Musk has met Russian President Vladimir Putin and other executives . The senators claimed that Musk cannot be reliable for governmental contracts and clearance holder based on his connection with Russian officials including deputy chief of staff Sergei Kiriyenko who is alleged to have masterminded Moscow’s schemes to influence the 2024 voting.

Some of these include SpaceX, in which Musk holds vast shares, already signing over $700 million contracts with the Space Force’s National Security Space Launch program. Starshield is also developing a separate network for the Space Force while the company also secured a $1.8billion classified deal with the National Reconnaissance Agency .
The senators’ awareness of commercial enactment in space was stressed by the fact that harnessing it for innovation is impossible if contractors do not act responsibly when it comes to sensitive capabilities, as stated by the report .
They asked both the Department of Defense and Justice to determine whether Musk’s communication with Russian officials should cause a reconsideration of his participation in SpaceX contracts .

In response to the allegations, Musk was quick to respond on X, saying, ‘I’m going to find out who’s making these accusations and nuke them. But, to this date, neither Musk nor SpaceX has made a statement on this issue.
It’s nice to know that the investigation could affect SpaceX’s future contracts and even Musk’s affiliation with the US government. Consequently, due to the company’s extensive implication on defense and intelligence space programming, the senators’ concern on the threats posed to national security cannot be dismissed .
