Following Hurricane Helene, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declined to answer calls from Vice President Kamala Harris. A Desantis representative told NBC News, “Kamala was trying to reach out, and we didn’t answer.” The representative said the calls “seemed political.”

During the press conference, DeSantis said, “The president has approved what we asked for. We’re thankful for that. If there’s something we need that they don’t approve, I will not hesitate to call him…. But everything we’ve asked for, from President Biden, he has approved.” In response to a question concerning these claims, DeSantis said, “I didn’t know she called me…. I was not aware of that.”

According to The Hill, President Biden spoke with Governor DeSantis and Tampa Mayor Jane Castor on different calls. Karine Jean-Pierre, press secretary for the White House, told CNN that “the governor, it’s up to him if he wants to respond to us or not.”
Vice President Harris criticized the governor of Florida for engaging in “political games” at such a critical juncture, in response to questions on DeSantis’ alleged refusal to return her calls. In an interview on Monday, Harris blasted the governor of Florida, saying, “Playing political games with this moment, in these crisis situation[s], these are the height of emergency situation[s], [is] utterly irresponsible, and it is selfish and it is about political gamesmanship instead of doing the job that you took an oath to do, which is to put the people first.”
During his interview, DeSantis intensifies the feud. “Kamala Harris is delusional if she thinks that my only concern is the people of Florida,” he remarked. It is not her role in this. She has actually been vice president for the past three and a half years; during this administration, I have weathered several hurricanes. She has never made a contribution to any of these initiatives. I find it self-serving that she is attempting to stumble into this.
