Kremlin’s Stance: Putin Chooses Virtual BRICS Meeting Over In-Person G20 summit Amid ICC Warrant


An arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against President Putin for alleged war crimes in Ukraine is being strongly contested by the Kremlin. Consequently, the Kremlin has made it clear that President Putin does not plan to participate in person at the forthcoming G20 summit in India, scheduled for September. This decision stems from the potential jeopardy of arrest that the ICC’s warrant introduces when he travels outside of Russia. As an alternative to attending in person, President Putin opted to virtually join a gathering of leaders from the BRICS group held in South Africa earlier this week.

Putin’s Travel Restrictions:

South Africa, as a signatory of the ICC, was anticipated to aid in Putin’s apprehension if he were in the country. According to Bloomberg’s report citing Interfax news service, the Kremlin stated that Putin’s schedule is occupied, with his primary focus being on Russia’s engagement in the Ukraine conflict. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, conveyed this on Friday. Since the Ukraine invasion in February 2022, Putin has rarely ventured beyond Russia’s borders, prompting extensive global criticism and sanctions by the US and its partners. He also chose not to attend the previous G-20 summit in Indonesia.
