Meloni meets Trump, and “Make West Great Again”: Trade Talk Heats Up!
There has been a lot of going on regarding the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s much-talked-about meeting with the erstwhile occupant of the highest office in the United States in the context of US-EU future trade relations. The high-profile conversation took place within the frame of new contouring global economic realities and changing political frontiers on both sides of the Atlantic.
According to reports during their meeting, the former president also praised the Italian leader as a ‘real leader’: thus describing, viewed in context, a major boost given by the former president to the Italian Prime Minister, who now bears the weight of concerns on the European stage. It creates influence at a time when relations are growing strong and serious over the transatlantic trading agreements. Such a possible redesign of these agreements can have far-reaching ramifications for world industries, economies, and geos.
For Italy, concrete trade activation would play a lot towards fortune with the US. This would give the US access to the most important European economies that have a strong manufacturing and agricultural base. It becomes crucial, both to employment in Italy and to Italian companies, that they would access this market from the other side of the Atlantic. Of course, the parallel with the large US country is much about trade ties with Italy, importing quite a number of high-quality commodities and services. Any negotiation in these deals would thus need to pay serious attention to the national interests of both countries to become a win-win arrangement and not so grievous an economic disruption.
The most part, because US-EU trade is so intricate, any possible future arrangements among the two would cover broad-reaching sectors under very complicated regulatory frameworks. All previous attempts to get to one carried very serious hurdles, oftentimes having to do with differing standards, agricultural sensitivity, and damages to domestic industry. In this sense, every negotiation in the future would need to be delicately negotiated, and both sides must be willing and able to give to get common ground.
From the day Meloni took office, she put Italy as one of the most important players in European affairs and has been striving to fortify bilateral relations with the US. As a result, the position of the government on trade might probably be determined by the objective to defend Italian interests while recognizing the importance of a strong partnership transatlantically. This becomes valuable, however, for shaping intense litmus bed in the future of Italy’s position on any trade discussions.
The perspective of the individual Meloni met is also interesting. He pursued a trade policy that involved ensuring the private interests of the US in which foreign policy creates controversy with former friends, including from the European Union, during his tenure. Some of his opinions regarding trade agreements as well as his previous actions may provide clues to the direction he would pursue if placed again in a position of influence. That phrase “Make West Great Again” evokes the familiar sounds of a political slogan, but it takes on a very particular hue in the context of this meeting.

In the end, the exchanges between the former president and Meloni have underlined that the U.S.-EU relationship is still very much alive and significant. Trade then becomes an area critical to this relationship, and developments here will have a ripple effect. When deliberations bloom, stakeholders on both sides of the Atlantic will be very keen to observe how these high-level exchanges will manifest in real outcomes affecting their economies and indeed wider geopolitical standing. The fate of US-EU trade, however, will be much dictated by the current dialog among the top leaders as well as the existing economic and political conditions operating in both regions.
