Canada has decided to withdraw 41 of its diplomats from India following New Delhi’s request for their removal, alleging interference in India’s internal affairs. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed strong concerns, stating that India’s revocation of diplomatic immunity for 40 Canadian diplomats violated diplomatic principles and international law. He also mentioned the alleged involvement of the Indian government in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil.

Justin Trudeau Criticizes India
Justin Trudeau emphasized that India’s actions were not in line with international law, and he accused India of making life difficult for millions of people in both India and Canada. He made these remarks during an event in Brampton.
New Delhi had demanded the removal of Canadian diplomats to achieve parity in the number of diplomatic staff stationed in both countries. India argued that Canada had more diplomats in India and had been interfering in India’s internal matters, justifying the move for diplomatic parity.
India Responds to Diplomatic Dispute
The Ministry of External Affairs in India dismissed Canada’s allegations of violating international law, asserting that the actions were consistent with the Vienna Convention’s Article 11.1. This article allows the receiving state to regulate the size of a diplomatic mission, considering the needs and circumstances.

The United States and the United Kingdom expressed concerns about the departure of Canadian diplomats from India, showing support for Canada in this diplomatic dispute.
