India Extends Sheikh Hasina’s Visa Amid Extradition Calls
Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has had her visa extended by the Indian government, despite growing calls for her extradition from Dhaka. Hasina has been in India since August 2024, after she stepped down as Prime Minister amid nationwide protests. The extension of her visa has been facilitated through the Foreigners Regional Registration Office, and it’s believed that the Union Home Ministry has signed off on the decision.
The move comes after the interim government in Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus, formally sought Hasina’s extradition through a diplomatic note sent to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs on December 23. However, India has remained cautious about the request, citing incomplete formalities. The Indian External Affairs Ministry has stated that it’s up to Hasina to decide her future plans, and that they don’t have an update on her plans.
Hasina’s stay in India has been shrouded in mystery, with reports suggesting that she’s been relocated to a safe house in Delhi. Her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, has dismissed rumors that her visa had been revoked and that she had sought asylum in India. The UK government has also effectively blocked any possible asylum request, and it’s believed that Hasina’s US visa has been revoked.

The extradition call from Dhaka is related to allegations of genocide and crimes against humanity committed during Hasina’s rule. The International Criminal Tribunal in Bangladesh has issued an arrest warrant for Hasina, and she’s been accused of playing a role in the enforced disappearance of several hundred people. The Indian government’s decision on the extradition request will depend on various factors, including legal obligations, diplomatic relations, and humanitarian concerns.
