Why Nancy Tyagi was a refreshing break from boring Cannes despatch
The 'outfit from scratch' reels of fashion influencer Nancy Tyagi had already made her a household figure among younger fashionistas. She outperformed all of the regulars at Cannes 2024 thanks to her self-assurance and inventiveness.
Why Nancy Tyagi was a refreshing break from boring Cannes despatch
The world fell (and felt) in love with Nancy Tyagi the moment she said these words on the Cannes 2024 red carpet while wearing a gorgeous pink ruffle gown that she had fashioned herself. Amidst the invasion of Indian celebs and influencers frolicking around the Cannes red carpet, the 23-year-old social media influencer was a breath of fresh air. She was already well-known among fashion fans (particularly Gen-Z) for her “outfit from scratch” Reels series. This year, there were far too many. So much so that it sparked internet discussion on whether or not everyone could currently attend the esteemed Cannes Film Festival.
Nancy Tyagi was one name that brought solely applause rather than scowls. Nancy, a resident of Baranwa hamlet in Uttar Pradesh and the daughter of a former factory worker, was the talk of the town. On social media, people from all walks of life came together to celebrate her victory. While she was praised by stars like Sonam Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, and Masaba Gupta, others were proud of her accomplishment—how a girl from a lowly background overcome all obstacles to win international recognition and surpass Cannes mainstays like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Beyond the tale of rags to riches People are drawn to motivational tales of rags to riches. But it is not the only reason Nancy is enjoying her success at Cannes. Her level of style brilliance surpassed what many famous people and fashion designers could muster for Cannes 2024. Many of them ended up being pretty sartorial disasters, in fact. You do not have to look farther than Aishwarya’s red carpet appearances, which are nearly always the most anticipated Cannes news for Indians. Similar to 2023, her attempt at fashion in the French Riviera failed this year as well.
The two extravagant, extremely unusual dresses, created by Falguni and Shane Peacock, were met with criticism from all quarters, especially in light of the fact that she had previously created iconic fashion moments at Cannes, such as her debut in a yellow Neeta Lulla saree. Many others, including Sobhita Dhulipala, Aditi Rao Hydari, and Jacqueline Fernandez, failed to create a noteworthy fashion moment this year.
Nancy, however, did just that—dressed in a lovely pink gown that she sewed herself with exquisite dexterity from 1,000 meters of cloth that she found in the narrow passageways of New Delhi’s Seelampur market.
Saree Cannes Look
Her second Cannes appearance was striking despite being modest in scale. She chose to go via saree as a tribute to India. Once more, an original work. Of course, the fashionista gave six yards of elegance a little extra oomph. She purchased an elaborately embroidered fabric from a Delhi market and sewed it into a striking saree with a backless choli and an edgy hood.
Now, handling a cloth with that much embellishment is not a simple task. Professional local tailors even avoid working on embroidered garments because they can be difficult to work on. Nancy, a self-taught artist, used her sewing machine to create a stunning saree. She has previously copied designer pieces worn by stars like Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone on a shoestring budget. What is an accent? She brought her Indianness to Cannes in more ways than just the saree. She stood out from her peers because of the refreshing manner she responded an English-speaking journalist in Hindi, as opposed to other peers who tend to instantly acquire an accent after visiting a foreign country (looking at you, Kiara).
