World Environmental Health Day is celebrated every year on the 26th of September in order to focus on the topic of environmental health and its significance for people’s health. This day was created by the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) in 2011 and its main goal is to draw the connection between human health and the environment. Every year, there is a focal area or theme which is set to focus on different areas of environment and health. The theme for 2024 consequently is **”Preventing and Mitigating Emerging Environmental Health Risks in Urbanizing World.”

History and Significance
World Environmental Health Day has its origin from the global awareness that the environment must be protected in order to protect the health of communities around the world. This day is celebrated through assembling of the environmental health professionals, scientists and policymakers to address out concerning issues that include pollution, climate change among others. It reminds one that the health of environment determines health of people particularly in the urban centers where the level of industrialization and growth of population has enhance prospect of environmental hazards.
This is because, this day seeks to highlight such concerns as air and water pollution, exposure to hazardous chemicals, climate change among others. As such, factors such as respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular and even certain types of cancer affect millions of people around the world.
Impact of Environmental Risks on Human Lives
There is no doubt that environmental risks affect human health in a great way. For example, severe problem such as air pollution results into 7 million deaths of people prematurely. Contaminated water results in water borne diseases and also unsafe foods result in different illnesses. Also, climate change causes the increased rate of the spread of infectious diseases since climate affects ecosystems and vectors of diseases.
The aforementioned risks if managed through sustainably and policy changes, along with individuals taking personal responsibility may reduce both, environmental and human degradation. World Environmental Health Day 2024 is therefore a wake-up call to governments, organizations and people into providing enhanced environments for the generations to come.
