Stubble Burning in Punjab increased Air Quality Index To Hazardous Levels
The district of Amritsar has the highest number of stubble burning cases (321), followed by the district of Tarn Taran (170). Punjab recorded 162 incidences of stubble burning on Sunday, bringing the season’s total to 872, one day after recording the greatest single-day jump in farm fire cases this season. The state’s air quality has been worse due to this increase in farm fire incidents.

Out of the 162 farm fire incidents that were reported on Sunday, the most incidences were found in four areas. Tarn Taran reported 38 cases, while Amritsar recorded 48. There were 26 instances reported in Patiala and 16 in Sangrur. With 321 documented occurrences, Amritsar district has so far seen the highest number of stubble burning incidents. Tarn Taran district has registered 170 incidences.

According to data from the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), about 70% of the stubble burning incidences that have been reported so far have occurred during the last four days, when paddy harvesting has increased. On September 15, the tracking of cases of stubble burning commenced. Certain cities in the state with “satisfactory” to “moderate” air quality have moved into this category as the number of farm fire instances rises.
The Bathinda district’s air quality index (AQI) dropped from “moderate” to “poor category” on Sunday night, with a reading of 206. The AQI for the districts of Patiala, Ludhiana, Amritsar, and Jalandhar was above 100, falling into the “moderate” range from the “satisfactory” level.
