Vivek Oberoi reveals 14-month work gap, and choosing business for independence

Vivek Oberoi reveals Bollywood struggles, lobby pressures, and his shift to business for independence

Vivek Oberoi Calls Bollywood an Insecure Place, Shares Why He Turned to Business. Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi has opened up about his challenging journey in the film industry and why he chose to become a businessman. Known for his roles in hit films like Saathiya and Company, Vivek faced a tough phase in his career when he had no work for over a year despite the success of Shootout At Lokhandwala.

In an interview, Vivek revealed how a lobby system in Bollywood affected his career. He shared, “The industry is a very insecure place. You could be performing well, winning awards, and still not get work for reasons beyond your control. After the success of Shootout At Lokhandwala in 2007, I thought I’d get more offers, but I didn’t. I sat at home for 14 to 15 months with no projects.”

During this difficult time, Vivek decided to activate his backup plan—business. He explained, “By 2009, I realized I didn’t want to depend entirely on Bollywood. I wanted financial independence to avoid being controlled by lobbies or pressured to compromise my values. For me, business was a way to escape that trap.”

Vivek shared that business was always his Plan B, while acting remained his passion. “I decided my livelihood would come from business, and cinema would remain my passion. Business gave me freedom. I didn’t have to sell my soul or bow to anyone, which is no way to live for me,” he said.

The actor has been part of 67 projects in his 22-year-long career. However, he acknowledges that the Bollywood industry is not always fair or secure for everyone.

Most recently, Vivek appeared in Rohit Shetty’s debut web series, Indian Police Force, alongside Shilpa Shetty and Sidharth Malhotra. His next project is the comedy film Masti 4, where he will reunite with Riteish Deshmukh and Aftab Shivdasani.

Vivek’s story highlights the challenges of Bollywood and the importance of having a backup plan in an unpredictable industry.
