The news was confirmed by The New York Times, which said Kilmer died of pneumonia, according to daughter Mercedes Kilmer. Kilmer’s talents, mixed reviews, and controversies marked his career through Hollywood.
Born in California and schooled at Juilliard, Kilmer became one of the biggest stars in 1990s cinema. He had often been described as intense, perfectionistic, and difficult to work with, sealing up the air of a Hollywood bad boy. Nonetheless, his brilliance sparkled in several unforgettable films like: Top Secret! in 1984, Real Genius in 1985. After this, Kilmer became really famous after the role of Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in Top Gun (1986). He again reprised the character in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick alongside Tom Cruise, which was a sentimental and highly lauded return.
In 1988, he did Ron Howard’s fantasy adventure Willow, and during the making of that film, he met his future wife, British actress Joanne Whalley, with whom he had 2 children before they parted ways. He burst on to the scene as a serious actor in 1991 when he played Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s The Doors.

Kilmer’s commitment to the role was second to none in order to convince Stone to cast him, he recorded an eight-minute audition tape mimicking Morrison’s mannerisms and voice. His performance was indeed widely praised and his own singing voice was used in the film. This set the stage for his reputation as a fervent and transformative actor.
The early ’90s marked the zenith of Kilmer’s career, including, among others, performances in Tombstone (1993) as Doc Holliday and Heat (1995), making him one of the few actors to share the screen with both Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.
In 1995, he filled the shoes of Batman in Batman Forever, replacing Michael Keaton. But the film was poorly received, and Kilmer was largely forgotten, with his reputation eclipsed by the performances of Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones. It emerged later that the set environment had been quite a stormy one for Kilmer, and so he passed on the role for the next sequel.

His precarious position in Hollywood was only exacerbated from that point onward by a string of flops and reports of on-set difficulties. In spite of this, he remained well-loved among his devotees and adored for his passion for the craft.
Later on, he faced several health problems, including throat cancer, which he touched upon in his 2020 documentary Val. The return in Top Gun: Maverick represented an emotional farewell from the industry. Kilmer’s death brings an end to an era, but his performances will continue to inspire generations to come.
