Ungli: Movie Review***

Ungli produced by Karan Johar for Dharma Productions, is a story of a gang of four friends: Abhay (Randeep Hooda) , Maya (Kangana Ranaut), Goti (Neil Bhoopalam) and Kalim (Angad Bedi). They take the responsibility to fix the problems prevailing in the society. Though their motives are positive, their methods are wrong, in the eyes of law. Their mantra is: “Jab ghee seedi aur tedhi ungli se na nikle, tab beech ka raasta apanana padta hai.” (When things can’t be fixed easily, one has to take things in their own hands.)

The plot revolves around the police and media’s chase to uncover the gang members, who are heroes in the eyes of the common citizens. The movie borrows the “double life” concept from the superhero comics, where the protagonists have two identities. Abhay is a famous journalist; His crush is Tiesta (Neha Dhupia), who is also her colleague. (Lois and Clarke?) She has been assigned to cover the story of the Ungli gang.

While Nikhil (Emraan Hashmi) is a cop, who is known for his rowdy ways, and has a mentor, his dad’s friend, ACP Kale (Sanjay Dutt). He gets assigned to uncover the identity and arrest the Ungli Gang. During the first half an hour, Emraan Hashmi has a thin on-screen time, save his signature on-screen kiss and a dance number.

Meanwhile, The Ungli gang, serve justice to many people, including a retired pensioner, Dubey Ji, They teach a lesson, to the head of the RTO, Mumbai.

Nikhil, starts working undercover and starts imitating the style of The Ungli gang, which infuriates them. They come to threaten Nikhil, to stop, but he doesn’t stop. He bluffs them, pretending to be a law student. Finally, they add him to their group, just by observing him in his college, which seemed immature, considering their brilliant jobs of uncovering the truth.

Slowly they start becoming friends, and they tell Nikhil about how it started with the injustice of the system, which sent their friend and Maya’s brother, Ricky (Arunoday Singh) to coma.

After a series of side swapping and questioning the right and wrong, they execute their final job, by exposing the corrupt people in the police force.

The movie is full of phrases and dialogues, some of them which were witty, others which were just unnecessary.

The plot seems similar to Munnabhai MBBS, except, that this time, instead of using Gandhigiri as the weapon; they do it the Ungli Way. The actors were good, though not exceptional, which we expected from Actors like Randeep Hooda, Emraan Hashmi and Kangana Ranaut.

Overall, the movie was an entertainer, but it didn’t create the impact, as it was supposed to. To sum up, the plot was predictable, without any major plot-twists, which I was expecting at some points, during the movie. I guess, that was the plot-twist.

But the Choreography by Bosco-Caesar was good and the songs were catchy, especially “Respected Adarniya Ungli. I’ll give it 3 stars.
