Zoya in Raanjhanaa
Zoya is a Muslim women living in the streets of Varanasi. She has her desires and aspirations to study. She is the love interest of Kundan, an uneducated hindu boy, who stalks her from the streets of Varanasi to the JNU campus of Delhi, where Zoya was later sent to study. Where Zoya herself is a flawed woman, we see her character, a lot more close to human nature.
Pari Walia in Pad Man
Pad Man, which is one of the finest social films made in the mainstream cinema, deals with the story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, the inventor of a low-cost sanitary pad-making machine. The character, Laxmikant Chauhan is based on Arunachalam Muruganantham. Sonam Kapoor played the role of Pari Walia, a woman who guides Laxmikant Chauhan for how to make these pads reach to the menstruators of the village.
