Triptii Dimri Defends Her Character Zoya in Animal, Emphasizing the Importance of Exploring Complex Human Emotions Amidst Film Criticism

In the months since its release, Animal has continued to dominate conversation and much of that discussion has centered around its portrayal of gender relations. Lead actor Triptii Dimri (Zoya) provided an insight into her character at the India today Mumbai Conclave 2019. Asked for response to some of he early criticism levelled at the film’s depiction of women, with more than one review calling it misogynistic, Dimri leapt to her own character’s defence describing Zoya as “brave and innocent.”

“As an actor, you have to do something that scares you. Every time I sign a role, I’m like if it scares me then it compels me and that’s what happened when Sandeep Sir spoke to me about Zoya.”

Addressing the backlash towards Animal, she emphasised, “I would approach Zoya’s character exactly the same way I did. As humans, we all have different shades—good, bad and even ugly.” And she feels that cinema is perhaps the only medium that can do justice to exploring the vast human experience. Actors are lucky to live through so many emotions and stories, Triptii concludes.

After Animal, Triptii Dimri will be seen in Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3.
