Tanu Weds Manu Returns: Movie Review

Tanu Weds Manu Returns: The Imperfect Perfect Couple

There were roars; boundless roars of laughter. Tanu weds Manu Returns is a perfect sequel and none better than director Anand L Rai could have made that happen. It will break your serious office faces into exemplary dashes of smiles.

The film begins with flashbacks from the wedding scene where Tanu (Kangana Ranaut) and Manu (R. Madhavan) got hitched, and jumps to the post four year marriage drama in London. It’s for a vague ten minutes that we see both man and wife whining about the other in a mental asylum after which they part ways and the film returns to Lucknow, Kanpur and Delhi. That’s where Manu encounters Kusum, a Delhi University student, who is a fearless, gutsy young ‘Jaat’ girl and a passionate athlete but most importantly, happens to be Tanu’s lookalike. Manu goes through a sea of emotions rushing past him after which, what happens next is a twist with a treat. The climax will, for a minute, make you bite your nails and you will want to shout out loud to make Manu do the right thing, but patience my friend; it’s a happy ending after all.

The film is well edited, crisp without being dragged at all. But what makes it a full ‘paisa wasool’ flick is the constant cramps of laughter one goes through. Before you laugh at something, something else comes up. Be it the brilliant script written by Himanshu Sharma with the marvellous one-liners, the stunning conversations, the hysterical jokes or the execution of it all by the cast, everything will leave you in splits.

Every actor delivers magnificence; they leave you pondering over who to love more. Kangana Ranaut has proved her mettle yet again in the double role that she plays. She justifies the nonchalance in Tanu’s role as flawlessly as she adapts to the Haryanvi diction and athleticism of Kusum. R. Madhavan has swiftly depicted the truest emotions of a man on the verge of a failed marriage and the confusion between his heart and mind.

The supporting cast; Jimmy Shergill (Raja), Swara Bhaskar (Payal) and Eijaz Khan (Jassi) have truly pillared the spectacular film with their splendid roles. But its actor Deepak Dobriyal aka pappi ji who outshines them all. This man has a way to go; he is a film in itself.

This splendid work gets a 4 on 5 stars from me. Even after such a review, if Tanu weds Manu Returns fails to top your ‘to-do-list’ this weekend, then do get checked mate!
