This Superstar in Russia, gave India’s 1st ₹100-crore hit; Guess the name ?
When films like Ghajini and 3 Idiots achieved that milestone in the domestic market at the end of the 2000s, the phrase “100-crore club” became part of the Bollywood vernacular. It quickly became the standard by which to judge the success of an Indian film. Ghajini and Om Shanti Om were not the first Indian films to reach ₹100 crore at the box office, despite what the general public believes. That occurred in the 1980s, and neither Amitabh Bachchan nor Rishi Kapoor, two of the more traditional superstars, were included in the aforementioned movie.

The unexpected response to the trivia question is that Babbar Subhash’s musical drama Disco Dancer was the first Indian movie to earn ₹100 crore at the box office. Because the majority of Disco Dancer’s revenue originated from outside the country, it is not regarded as a member of the so-called 100 Crore Club. With Mithun Chakraborty as the title musical star, the movie made ₹6.4 crore in India, which was a respectable sum at the time. However, its triumph in the Soviet Union was what turned it become a worldwide hit.

It became the biggest hit in Russia in 1984 after selling over 12 crore tickets there, two years after it was released in India. Its total earnings reached ₹100.68 crore after earning 60 million roubles (₹94.28 crore). As a result, Disco Dancer became the first Indian film to reach the ₹100-crore milestone and surpassed Sholay to become the highest-grossing movie.
In the Soviet Union, the movie’s star, Mithun Chakraborty, became into a cult figure. Disco Dancer’s tunes, especially Jimmy Jimmy’s chart-topping hits, made them a cultural phenomenon in China and Russia for years. Disco Dancer is still shown in numerous Russian film clubs as part of their “vintage” screenings. In addition to Mithun, Rajesh Khanna and Kim starred in Disco Dancer, with Om Puri, Gita Siddharth, and Karan Razdan playing supporting parts. Funky disco music by Bappi Lahiri enhanced the movie’s allure.
