Shah Rukh Khan Recalls Divya Bharti’s Death Impact on His Career
In a very personal and somewhat haunting memory, Shah Rukh Khan, Bollywood megastar, reflected on an early turning point in his career-the tragic end of actress Divya Bharti. He reminisced candidly about his emotional state following the tragic loss of his co-star and how it quite astonishingly coincided with the inception of his rise to stardom.
Shah Rukh Khan and Divya Bharti were contemporaries in the early 1990s; both young, gifted and standing on the threshold of much-deserved fame. A vivacious and charming Divya had seduced Bollywood just as fast with her charisma and charm. Shah Rukh and Divya worked together in Deewana, a romantic action-drama released in 1992, with Shah Rukh’s first film being the climax of Divya’s first film. The film became a massive hit, remembered best for its chart-busting music and dramatic storyline.
Khan remembered the surreal feeling that found him when, just after Divya’s demise in 1993, he began noticing people dancing to his songs, “Aisi Deewangi” being the most-watched song of the movie, Deewana. “I remember going to a party, and they were playing ‘Aisi Deewangi,’ and I saw people dancing. That was the moment I realized that maybe I had become a star. But I also felt guilty… because Divya had passed away,” Shah Rukh shared.
Divya Bharti met with a tragic death at the age of 19 under mysterious circumstances after falling from the balcony of her Mumbai apartment. The whole nation was shocked by her death, and the speculations about the circumstances surrounding it have not yet been put to bed. For Shah Rukh, who was still new to the film industry, the incident was emotionally disturbing, made all the more disconcerting with the fact that, immediately after, his own career showed a perceptible upswing.
“There was this strange mix of emotions,” SRK confessed. “On one hand, I was getting recognition; people started calling me a hero; my name was out there… and on the other hand, I had lost someone I had worked with, someone full of promise. I didn’t know how to feel.”

It is one of those seldom-discussed facets of celebrity life, where personal grief collides with professional success. Khan admitted to feeling lost and even guilty about his incongruous leap into stardom after the death of a colleague. It is one of those things that make this superstar human, revealing that under all the glittering glamour is a man who also grappled with his feelings like anyone else.
Through the years, the extraordinary career of Shah Rukh Khan has firmly implanted him in the annals of world cinema. Yet his memories of Divya Bharti endure, as does the imprint of her presence on him at a critical junction in his journey. While Deewana marked the initiation of his career, his fond memories of working with Divya Bharti quickly turned the film into an ambivalent milestone-the commencement of his success and the end of a life full of promise. By remembering Divya Bharti, Khan honors a friend he has lost and highlights the curious, arbitrary paths that life and celebrity draw.
