Shah Rukh Khan produced Ittefaq without reading the script or charging interest, supporting new filmmakers

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has always been known for his generosity and strong relationships in the industry. A recent revelation by Renu Chopra, wife of late filmmaker Ravi Chopra, has once again proved why he is one of the most respected figures in Indian cinema.

In an interview, Renu Chopra shared how Shah Rukh Khan agreed to produce the 2017 thriller ‘Ittefaq’ without even reading the script. The film, starring Sonakshi Sinha, Sidharth Malhotra, and Akshaye Khanna, was directed by her son Abhay Chopra, marking his debut as a filmmaker.

SRK Agreed to Produce Without Reading the Script

Renu Chopra recalled that when she approached Shah Rukh Khan to collaborate on Ittefaq, he immediately agreed. However, she initially struggled to set up a meeting with the busy superstar. She said, “I asked him if I could meet him, but he refused. Instead, he said he would come to me out of respect.”

After three weeks of waiting, she decided to go meet him herself. When they finally sat down, Shah Rukh asked how he could help with the project. She explained that she did not have enough money to finance the film. His response was immediate: “I’ll put my money.”

Surprisingly, Shah Rukh did not even ask for the script before making his decision. His reason? He believed in the people behind the project more than the story itself. “I never back the horse; I back the jockey,” he told Chopra. “If your son is backing the film, I’ll back it too.”

SRK Refused to Charge Interest on the Film’s Finances

Not only did Shah Rukh Khan invest his money in the project, but he also refused to charge any interest on it. Normally, when producers finance a film, they expect returns with an additional interest rate. However, SRK declined to take any extra money.

Renu Chopra revealed, “The money was always 50-50 down the line. And when the movie was completed, like all financial deals, there was supposed to be an interest rate. But Shah Rukh said, ‘No, this is forbidden for me. I won’t take it.’”

This generous act once again highlights Shah Rukh Khan’s humility, kindness, and support for new filmmakers. Despite being one of the biggest stars in the industry, he continues to help others without expecting anything in return.
