Samay Raina, the popular stand-up comic, recently covered the Ranveer Allahbadia controversy during his live show at the Myer Horowitz Theater in Edmonton, Canada. Dutta reported Samay Raina to have been clearly exhausted, stress being written on his face. While he climbed the stage, there were tears running down his cheeks, an uncommon sight for an artiste popular for getting people to laugh. Though his emotions got the better of him, he held his breath, steadied himself, and went ahead with the act as the audience cheered his name in appreciation.
In a report written in Bangla, Dutta said that he admired the strength of Raina. “I realized the actual meaning of this saying only a few hours back when I went to watch this man’s live performance! For the first time, I witnessed almost seven hundred so-called ‘spoiled’ individuals of this generation shouting his name at the top of their voices, and in the middle of them stood a professional stand-up comedian with tears rolling down his cheeks just before beginning the performance.”
While on air, a crowd member cracked a joke about Samay Raina, which left him to speak about the controversy that is facing Ranveer Allahbadia. After another crowd member made a derisive comment, Raina promptly fired back with his signature wit.
“Iss show pe bahot mauka ayega, jahan aapko lag sakta hai ki main bahot funny kuch bol sakta hoon, par tab BeerBiceps ko yaad kar lena bhai (During this show, there will be many opportunities where you will feel that I could say something very funny, but remember BeerBiceps during such times),” he said with laughter and applause erupting from the audience.
Despite the progression of the night, Raina did not allow the gravity of the controversy to eclipse his performance. He entertained the audience for two hours, showing that comedy can prevail even in bad times. As the show reached its conclusion, he spoke of his recent hardships in a moving closing statement.
“Shayad samay kharab chal raha hai mera, par yaad rakhna doston, main samay hoon (Maybe my time is bad right now, but remember, my friends—I am time itself),” he declared, making the audience go both emotional and inspired.
There was more to the night than just comedy; it was an example of a performer’s defiance and unbroken spirit who continues to stand on his feet no matter what odds are against him.
